A Note On Scams

As most of us are aware, scams are unfortunately a very real part of crypto. For us this was taken to a new level the other day when we were notified of a fake DeSpace website that some criminals had launched.

With our September IDO just around the corner, we thought this was an opportune moment to remind everyone to be aware of scams and provide some tips that can help you avoid malicious actors in the crypto world. This is an incredibly exciting time for all of us, and with a little bit of care everyone can participate in our community safely!

Remember, members of the DeSpace team will never message you first regarding promotions, giveaways or to request funds.

DeSpace official channels

One of the easiest ways to avoid scams is to always make sure you’re using DeSpace’s official channels for information. We’ll list them here with their full URLs:

You can also find links to these in our official medium posts, but one of the best ways to make sure you’re accessing the right channels is to go from our website directly. Our website’s URL is simple but please consider bookmarking it to ensure you always navigate directly to us.

DES token contracts

Our IDO is coming up in September, and for other projects this period has coincided with an increase in scam activity surrounding their tokens.

You cannot trade DES prior to the IDO. Anyone offering you tokens before this time is a scammer.

Our IDO will be run through our launchpad partners. These will be the only places you can register for whitelisting. Make sure you follow our official channels for more information.

Post-IDO, make sure you double check the contract address before trading DES on decentralized exchanges. Anyone can make fake tokens which can be freely traded on DEXs. Always make sure you’re trading on the correct DES pool: the contract addresses will be posted on official DeSpace channels, as well as on the DeSpace listings on sites like CMC and CoinGecko.

Fake Telegram groups

At the time of writing, there were about four fake DeSpace Telegram groups, all with thousands of members. To populate these, scammers will create the fake group to imitate the official ones and then invite members from the real group. Fortunately, there is a small change you can make to your settings that can prevent this from happening.

Remember: scammers are crafty. While this fix might work in most cases, you should still always be cautious.

First, navigate to your Telegram settings. Access the ‘Privacy and Security’ settings.

Navigate to the settings under ‘Groups and Channels’. Change this setting from ‘Everybody’ to ‘My Contacts’.

This slight change will prevent strangers from adding you to groups. Your contacts will still be able to invite you.

If you are invited to a fake DeSpace group, report it and leave it immediately.

A little bit of care goes a long way

It only takes a moment to verify a URL, group name or contract address, but doing so could end up saving you from a scam. It’s unfortunate that we event need to discuss this, but scams are a reality in crypto. All of the things we’ve mentioned in this article can be applied to any other crypto community that you’re a part of, and if you’re aware of what you need to do, before long this due diligence becomes automatic.

While we do our best to monitor fake groups and scammers, there is unfortunately very little we can do about them, and DeSpace is not liable for their actions. Please, report any scams that you see, and block and mute scammers that attempt to contact you. As a community we can help tackle this problem together.
